Accelerated Reader

What is Accelerated Reader (A.R.)?

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice (excerpt from Parent's Guide to Accelerated Reader).

BL indicates the book level.

How do I pick out leveled books for my child?

Students will have the opportunity to check out leveled books from both the classroom and the school library. You can also visit the library or bookstore. To determine what level a book is and whether the book has a quiz, simply access  arbookfind.com.

How does the school determine my child's reading level?

Teachers determine your child's reading level with the Renaissance Star Reading® test. Students will take this test typically three times during the academic year: at the beginning, middle, and end.
